Today, 19th July, Cr Celia Wade-Brown was delighted to open the Wellington Curtain Bank.

"It's sad that children are living in cold draughty homes and missing days from school because their homes are below standard. Elderly people are also at risk from respiratory diseases. While the world's nations are dithering post-Copenhagen, locals can get on with being more energy efficient."

"It's so cost-effective in terms of health and emissions reduction to help the community help themselves."

As well as their work on home insulation and energy advice, the Sustainability Trust, based in Newtown's Horner Street, has started a Curtain Bank.

Curtains are donated but need thermal linings added. Help is also available for putting up curtain rails.Wellington City Council's grants scheme supported this project. Genesis Energy is a corporate sponsor and they have helped several other curtain banks around the country.

This project offers low income residents and those with chronic health conditions free curtains to help retain warmth this winter, making their homes healthier and cosier. People can apply through many agencies including the Citizen Advice Bureau.

Supporters can help keep Wellington families warm this winter by donating unwanted curtains to Wellington's new Curtain Bank.
